On the Benefits of Being Edited

Our friend Epic Black Car wrote a post about why it's important to be edited, and mentions me along the way. (Actually, he calls me a "glowing mystical being" -- and he doesn't even follow it up with "and therefore we must kill the alien." Nice.)

Theresa

ps. Yes, blog posts have been thin lately -- we're both in crazy busy cycles at the moment. And yes, I do still have some setting examples which we will get to. Soon. I can see the light at the end of this deep, black tunnel, so thanks for your patience, and we'll be back to regular posting schedules soon.

I'll add my comments regarding the benefits of being edited. Look at it this way, any MS that will be shopped around will be evaluated by pros at agencies and publishing houses, so why not have another pro who has worked in those businesses evaluate your submission and catch problems that will get your work rejected?

At the risk of appearing like I'm sucking up, Theresa, your evaluation of my MS has improved it greatly. To my fellow participants, here is a partial list of ways my current draft is better: opened with a different scene that had been buried farther back in the MS, changed the POV of a chapter to make it more impactful (same scene, just see thru a different character's eyes), killed more back-story (I thought I had gotten rid of enough, but it wasn't enough), found places to add more tension, replaced summary with real-time action and dialogue, and of course, caught some bush league errors. There have been other benefits, but these should make the point.

On another subject, is anyone having trouble posting comments? I have, which is why I'm doing this as anonymous. Maybe my computer is hosed, but I've noticed fewer comments lately.

Theresa the Stevens,

Good to see that your blogging finger is not completely broken.

And yes, you ARE a glowing mystical being.

Just wanted to take a moment to say I appreciate your blog and your posts. I learn so much. Thank you.

It's more than worth the wait.

Wes, I don't know what's going on with the comments, but others have mentioned this same problem to me. I don't think there's anything we can do about it. I looked at settings and tried tinkering with a few things, but it didn't seem to help.

It's been a pleasure to work with you and your manuscript. I can see this project taking shape right before my eyes, and that's a cause for joy.

Epic, not broken, just badly sprained. ;) Sometimes it just goes this way, and everything is due at the same time. I think by Saturday, maybe Sunday, the time pressure will ease some. If not, send vodka, cuz I'll need it.

Emily, thank you. That's comforting. I do worry about it when Alicia and I both get into one of these bad busy stretches at the same time. And honestly, when it gets like this, I miss the blog! We've met some of the nicest people as a result of this blog. I think that's my favorite part of this whole little adventure.

LOL they're all right. You're awesome sauce. Although we all miss it when you guys are busy, we completely get the busy thing.

We're appreciative that you two are still doing this blog. I know I am!!!!

Thanks for all the wonderful help and advice :)

It's not that complicated. People who do things for monies, full-time, work with other peoples who do it for monies, full-time. GO WITH A PRO. Wouldn't ask my neighbor to fix the transmission of my car or my sister to do grab a scalpel and take out my appendix.
