Great start, Ian! Very intriguing premise too. I should put that in the comments THERE. :)
Very interesting story. Not at all what I expected from the title, nor from the opening paragraph.
One question: If Tom didn't know who Brian's mother was, how is it that he found out sometime after he proposed to and/or married Ellen, that he was going to be a father? Wouldn't he know who the mother was if she contacted him or had a friend or relative contact him on her behalf?
Guess I need to read the rest of the story to know...
