I just saw James Patterson on a commercial. He said, "Buy my book, or I'll have to kill off Alex Cross." (That's his fictional detective.) It was kind of funny.
He seemed like a really mild man to write such gruesome mysteries!

I hated those commercials. I didn't buy the book and he didn't kill off Alex Cross. So much for truth in advertising.
Laura, I too didn't buy the book. I guess he didn't keep his word.
But you know, it makes me wonder how much he earns per book, if he can buy TV commercial time.

I read an in-depth article on Patterson and his book manufacturing business earlier this year. My search-fu is failing me though, because I cannot find a link to it now. It talked about his stable of co-authors, how he got into the business, how important he is to his publisher, etc. It was fairly recent, because it made references to _Swimsuit_. If anyone can find a link to that store again, I'd appreciate it.
Is this it, Adrian? It's a Time article.

The NYTimes had an article about how Patterson gave a rave blurb for the first book of one of his "collaborators." http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/books/05dejo.html?_r=1
I think this is one of those "them that has, gets" situations. Got to be a rich writer to afford a stable of writers.

Thanks Alicia, but those weren't it. The article I read was much longer and with more depth. I'll keep looking.
