I came across the funniest mention the other day, of a retired European homicide detective who earnestly explained that Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment was used as an investigative model for Italian police, because it said so much about how to catch a murderer.

Well, if something is well researched, why would it matter that it forms part of a work of fiction?
The description of the battle of Waterloo in Georgette Heyer's An infamous Army was used for years to teach about the battle in military history classes.

It's hard to imagine old Fyodor researching police procedure. But I bet he had "crazy paranoids" so down.
