Okay this is very interesting and timely. I was *just* discussing what was going on with Dorchester over dinner yesterday with a friend (well, the little I'd read about what was going on, I should say) and talking about what several online people were saying about what this could do to the future of book publishing, royalties, etc., and my friend gave me a weird look and said, "It sounds to me like something got seriously mismanaged and now they're scrambling to keep their head above water. If this wasn't a book publisher and somebody who made cars or something, what would you say? I'd say they'll fold within a year."
Reading the blog made me wonder if the friend had, indeed, garnered the right conclusion and that the change over was prompted by an inside business problem than it was a "let's make the natural move toward ebooks because that's the future and now all publishers will follow...." which is how a lot of people were interpreting what was going on with them.

Watching this play out will be very interesting.

Well, see how many editors they have left. That'll be a sign of whether they mean to acquire a lot in the future.
ReplyDeleteInteresting news. I keep hearing there'll be news about B/N soon too.
