Plenty of other places, but never at a banquet. (Mine was a whippet, not a greyhound, and her name was infinitely better than Fuzzy or Rover.)

Full disclosure: I did, however, make friends with a writer in a bar one time over a shared love of dogs, among other things. And later, I did buy her work, but not because of the dogs. I bought it because she knocked me flat breathless with her roller coaster storytelling. (Hi, Nathalie!)

It's all about the story. *Your* story. Not some other story someone else wrote.

Theresa
ps. That dog-loving writer in the bar? Thank you once again for a great post. I...Alicia,

Thank you once again for a great post. I think any writer needs to realize just how many hundreds of queries/submissions the typical agent/editor receives. How do you think they get through that huge pile? They purposely look for a reason to reject each one - quickly - so they can get to the next item.

So don't give them a reason to reject it. :) Don't make it easier for them by breaking some rule. We've heard Teresa and Alicia here say that they have an idea within the first 3 lines of a manuscript whether or not it'll be any good. They'll never get past the first 3 lines if you hand them a reason to reject it so quickly. The same goes for any other agent/editor. A rule broken, especially near the beginning, is just handing them a convenient excuse to reject it. :)

Jami G.Jami Goldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00957122956518765455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-90722060880490578322009-09-08T10:50:53.878-05:002009-09-08T10:50:53.878-05:00Leg-warmers!
