I'll put things in my story "just because" it feels right or whatever and someone will read it and later comment that they loved the symbolism of XYZ scene or element because it reflected the blah blah of the story and I'll have that deer in the headlights moment of "I did? Oh. Yeah... Right. Sure. I did!" LOL.

JTJulie Harringtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02880895598847092028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-5548805430039549982009-05-30T18:48:09.058-05:002009-05-30T18:48:09.058-05:00This is great. I love it when I start to see the craft behind the reading experience (I'm a reader, not a writer).Elizabethhttp://underagereading.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-85068381391008268152009-05-30T10:56:43.117-05:002009-05-30T10:56:43.117-05:00This is great. It is fun when that happens:).emhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02680468150513341426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-31465522674675779902009-05-30T10:02:47.414-05:002009-05-30T10:02:47.414-05:00Yeah, what's fun is what ALSO happens that you did...Yeah, what's fun is what ALSO happens that you didn't have to plan.

AEdittorrenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14295505709568570553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-14812450316636353282009-05-29T22:11:46.421-05:002009-05-29T22:11:46.421-05:00So, so, so true. A friend of mine explained this as "scene sequencing arising organically from goal, motivation, conflict" and it took me what feels like flipping forever to learn. I still struggle with it because every time I think of a scene I think:

What is the point of the scene?

What does it show/what do I learn about the POV character? About the Non-POV characters?

How does it further what the character is trying to achieve, or does it hamper it?

What can the characters do and say in it to tie into that goal and conflict?

There's more, obviously, to ask as I go through and build, but there so much to consider and tinker with. It's amazing.

Suddenly that quick swim the hero talked the heroine into turns into an experiement in, say, trust when she finds out he's never been snorkling and he's a do-it-himself-er who doesn't like to rely on anyone and he gives in and trusts her and she comes through to teach him and not make fun of him and they wind up having more than a good time... they form a bond all in one pretty scene of "play."

JTJulie Harringtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02880895598847092028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6824896765631412903.post-40443112475857745392009-05-29T21:47:53.426-05:002009-05-29T21:47:53.426-05:00This is a great post.
