It's Father'...In direct address ("Dad! It's Father's Day! I'm taking you out for ice cream!"), you capitalize "dad"-- when it's a name substitute, and a name is a proper noun and capitalized. <br /><br />But "his dad" and "my dad", "dad" is a substitute for the common noun "father," so no cap.<br /><br />Just depends-- it's the usage that matters, not the word. The only thing it has to do with this particular post is I don't want to add to my line edits, or make a stupid mistake. <br /><br />I do have writer's handbook from college but I can't find this particular example.<br /><br />If a character is talking about/to their dad, is dad capitalized? Is it a proper noun in that usage? Am I second guessing myself too much? <br /><br />From blogs I have read, I'm afraid of making a 'beginner' mistake like that.
